This metric includes total expenditures for all research and development activities like clinical trials, applied research and experimental development, as reported in the National Science Foundation (NSF) annual survey of Higher Education Research and Development.

Total Research Expenditures ($Millions)

Research and Development (R&D) expenditures are the primary indicators of research and innovation in higher education. As of FY2021, the System ranks 5th among states’ public universities. The Board鈥檚 2025 Strategic Plan goal of $3.0 billion was set to further strengthen the System鈥檚 research profile and to increase national rankings in research.

This metric is included in the Board鈥檚 Accountability Plan, 2025 Strategic Plan, Preemienent Research University Benchmarks, as well as Florida Atlantic University鈥檚 Board of Trustee Choice Performance-Based Funding (PBF) Metric.
